Overview

The Higgs mechanism is a process in theoretical physics by which the Goldstone bosons of a spontaneously broken gauge symmetry are 'eaten' by the gauge bosons to provide them with mass. It is essential for explaining why the W and Z bosons of the weak interaction are massive while the photon of electromagnetism remains massless.
