Apple has stubbornly kept its devices' RAM capacities low, touting them as more memory-efficient compared to other platforms. Even the latest Macs come with a minimum configuration of 8GB, and the iPhone only has 6GB. However, in this era where AI features are all the rage, it's also true that low RAM simply isn't enough to perform AI processing in the first place, and under these constraints, Apple appears to be gradually changing its stance. According to XDA Developers, Apple has begun offering a feature on Mac that requires 16GB or more of installed memory, marking the first time the company has acknowledged that 8GB of memory isn't sufficient.

A new feature called "Predictive Code Completion" included in "Xcode 16," the developer tool Apple released alongside WWDC, uses AI assistance to predict the code developers want to write next and automatically generate it. While AI-powered code generation features like this have also drawn attention with tools such as GitHub Copilot, using this Predictive Code Completion feature in Xcode 16 requires a Mac with 16GB of installed memory and an M-series chip. Apple's release notes state the following:

"Xcode 16 includes predictive code completion that uses a machine learning model that is trained specifically for Swift and Apple SDKs, and requires a Mac with Apple silicon and 16GB of unified memory to use, and running macOS 15. (116310768)"

Even now, the minimum Mac configuration starts at 8GB of memory, and given how much Apple has promoted these models, it's likely that many users are actually using 8GB models. On such Macs, users will still be able to use Xcode 16, but they won't be able to use the Predictive Code Completion feature.

This marks the first time Apple has required 16GB of memory. While this is a feature aimed at software development, this kind of shift in stance is likely to have no small impact on the company's future policies. In particular, given that the MacBook Pro—a device that carries the "Pro" name and is aimed at a customer base that includes many software developers—still has a minimum configuration of 8GB, this is something that will likely change going forward.
