There's little doubt that Apple is developing the next generation of AirPods Pro, and a prominent leaker has reported that it will likely feature significantly enhanced active noise cancellation (ANC) capabilities. What's more, this could be arriving "soon."

AirPods Pro 3 May Introduce Revolutionary Digital ANC Technology

The biggest highlight of the new AirPods Pro appears to be a dramatically strengthened digital ANC feature. Prominent leaker Kosutami reports that this new ANC will be "much better than the previous version." Considering that the current AirPods Pro 2 claims "up to 2x" noise cancellation performance, it seems reasonable to expect even further evolution in the next-generation model.

This major improvement is believed to come primarily from advances in software and audio processing technology. In other words, it's likely that Apple can achieve a performance boost without significantly changing the earbuds' physical design. This suggests Apple is pursuing maximum effectiveness within limited physical space.

Beyond improved noise cancellation, the new AirPods Pro may include other notable features worth watching. According to previous reports, new health-related functions—such as body temperature and pulse monitoring—as well as a new audio chip are also reportedly in the works. These features could strengthen the positioning of AirPods Pro as a comprehensive healthcare device, going beyond that of a simple audio device.

Even more intriguing is a more ambitious upgrade reportedly planned for 2026. According to rumors, Apple is considering equipping future AirPods Pro with a radar camera, adding functionality to adjust audio in real time while using the Apple Vision Pro. If realized, this could significantly change the role of sound in augmented reality (AR) experiences.

Meanwhile, in terms of more near-term developments, Apple is expected to announce the AirPods 4 with noise cancellation capabilities at its "It's Glowtime" event scheduled for September 9. This would further round out Apple's wireless earbuds lineup.

Opinions differ among sources regarding the release timing. Kosutami states it will arrive "soon," though no specific date has been disclosed. Meanwhile, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman takes a more cautious view, predicting an AirPods Pro 3 launch in 2025. This timing—two years after the release of AirPods Pro 2—is somewhat ambiguous; while it's plausible that the new model could indeed arrive soon, considering the interval between the first and second generations of AirPods Pro, it's also conceivable that we might have to wait until next year.
