Reuters reports China's Ministry of Commerce has held closed-door talks with Alibaba, ByteDance, and Z.ai over possible restrictions on overseas access to top domestic AI models like DeepSeek and Qwen. The move comes around the same time as the US restricted Anthropic, and the ones left holding the bag are European and overseas developers who had come to rely on cheap Chinese AI.
