The Nuclear Engine for Rocket Vehicle Application (NERVA) was a joint program between NASA and the Atomic Energy Commission during the 1960s. It successfully demonstrated that nuclear thermal rocket engines were a viable and highly efficient technology for long-range space travel, such as missions to Mars, by achieving significantly higher specific impulse than chemical rockets.
