Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has released his latest predictions, reporting that Apple's first foldable iPhone is expected to launch in the second half of 2026. The device will reportedly feature a 7.8-inch crease-free inner display, but due to space constraints, it will not include Face ID—instead, Touch ID will be integrated into a side button. The price is expected to range from $2,000 to $2,500 (roughly ¥300,000–380,000), putting it well above even the current top-tier iPhone models.
Basic Specs and Innovative Design
The foldable iPhone is expected to adopt a "book-style" design, resulting in a form factor similar to Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold series. Specifically, it's predicted to feature an approximately 7.8-inch inner display and an approximately 5.5-inch outer display, with a thin profile measuring 9–9.5mm when folded and 4.5–4.8mm when unfolded.
Regarding the camera setup, the device will reportedly feature a dual-camera system with two rear lenses, while the front camera will be positioned so it can be used in both folded and unfolded states. The body will use titanium alloy for a premium feel, with the hinge expected to combine stainless steel and titanium alloy.
As for the battery, predictions suggest it will use the same high-density battery cells as the iPhone 17, though specific details regarding capacity and performance have not been disclosed.
Notable Features and Trade-offs
The most notable feature is the "crease-free display." This addresses one of the main drawbacks of foldable smartphones currently on the market, and Apple is expected to emphasize this technology as a key differentiator. According to analyst Ross Young, eliminating creases requires thicker front glass and chemical treatment, which drives up manufacturing costs.
On the other hand, as a trade-off for achieving the thin design, the device is not expected to include Face ID, a feature that is now standard on current iPhones. Instead, Touch ID will be integrated into a capacitive side button, similar to the approach used on the iPad Air. This would mark the first use of Touch ID on an iPhone without a home button.
Development Schedule and Market Forecast
According to Kuo's predictions, the final specifications for the foldable iPhone will be locked in during Q2 2025, with the official project kicking off in Q3 2025. Mass production is expected to begin in Q4 2026, with a launch anticipated in late 2026 or early 2027.
Initial shipment volumes will be limited due to the complexity of the manufacturing process, with 2026 shipments projected at around 3–5 million units. However, with a second-generation model expected to launch in the second half of 2027, total shipments for 2027 could reach as high as 20 million units.
Market Positioning and AI Features
Apple is expected to position this foldable iPhone as a "true AI-driven phone." According to Kuo, multimodal capabilities and cross-app integration are emerging trends in AI device use cases, and a larger screen would enhance the AI experience. For example, users could chat with a chatbot about travel plans while simultaneously viewing a fully displayed map app.
Despite the high price tag of $2,000–$2,500, Apple is expected to leverage the iPhone's status as a "must-have device" and its loyal fan base to drive strong upgrade demand, provided the quality meets expectations.
There are also reports suggesting that Apple is developing a foldable MacBook/iPad featuring an 18-inch display using similar "crease-free" display technology.
