The r-process (rapid neutron-capture process) is a set of nuclear reactions that in nuclear astrophysics are responsible for the creation of approximately half of the atomic nuclei heavier than iron. The process entails a succession of rapid neutron captures by heavy seed nuclei, typically starting with iron. It requires a high density of free neutrons and is thought to occur in extreme environments such as neutron star mergers and certain types of supernovae.
