Samsung Electronics has stated that the slight give felt when pressing the four corners of the inner display on the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is not a manufacturing defect, but a deliberate design to protect the screen. Since late August, users have been posting videos showing that the amount of give varies even between units of the same model. Samsung's response clarifies the purpose of the structure, but it stops short of giving buyers any numerical basis for judging whether their own device is behaving normally. To understand where specifications end and malfunction begins, it helps to distinguish between the areas designed to rigidly support the screen and the areas deliberately built to absorb force.
Not fixing the corners lets localized pressure escape when the phone is closed

The issue in question is this: when the phone is unfolded and a user presses a finger into the corners of the inner screen, the panel moves slightly inward relative to the frame, then springs back when released. According to Samsung's individual customer support responses, both the Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra include a cushioning structure at the four outer corners, and this slight give when pressed is by design. The extra clearance at the corners is intended to soften impact when display components press against each other or when pressure is applied from inside the device.
The design targets the localized load that occurs when the phone is folded shut. A Samsung representative told BusinessPost that if sand-like debris sticks to the inner screen and the device is then closed, it could scratch the display — so the screen was engineered to give slightly and cushion that impact. The same outlet examined one white 256GB unit and observed a slight dip when pressing firmly, though it did not measure the applied force or the amount of displacement, meaning no conclusions about variation across the broader product line can be drawn from a single unit.
According to information ConsumerTouch obtained from Samsung, the cushioning structure was added for the first time in the 2026 Fold8 in response to user feedback. Previous foldable models already carried warnings about not trapping debris against the screen. Samsung's support page states that the foldable display is built with a protective film and protective layer, beneath which sit ultra-thin glass and an AMOLED panel. Users are advised not to close the device with cards, keys, sand, or metal particles trapped inside. The cushioning structure is meant to reduce damage in the event something is trapped — it is not permission to trap foreign objects in the first place.
A different role than the structure Flex Titanium supports
The Fold8 generation also introduced technology specifically meant to rigidly support the screen. Flex Titanium, announced by Samsung on July 15, combines a titanium alloy film on the display side with a titanium support plate placed beneath it. The support plate is bonded so that no air gap remains between it and the display module, stabilizing the screen when the device is open. Fine perforations are cut into the fold area to preserve the flexibility needed for repeated folding.
At first glance, this explanation seems to contradict the give at the corners. But the role Samsung assigned to Flex Titanium in its official announcement is to support the display surface while minimizing the visibility of the crease. The corner cushioning structure, explained separately and later, is meant to relieve localized force from debris or internal components. Samsung has not described the two as the same mechanism.
On a foldable screen, uniformly rigid support across the entire surface doesn't necessarily equal better protection. The center folds, and when the device is closed, the left and right halves of the screen face each other. Rather than aiming for the same feel as a rigid, flat display, the design hinges on deciding where to provide support and where to let force dissipate. For the Fold8's corners, Samsung chose the latter.
The line between specification and malfunction still hasn't been published
Cross-referencing Samsung's public materials with its customer responses shows that while the purpose behind the corner give has been explained, Samsung has not disclosed the pressing force, deflection amount, or the acceptable tolerance — either between corners on the same unit or between different units — that would define the normal range. No mention of this behavior appears in either the Flex Titanium launch announcement or the Fold8's product announcement and spec sheet. A Samsung representative told BusinessPost that because this is a feature meant to avoid inconveniencing users, it wasn't separately explained through official channels.
The fact that it wasn't explained doesn't itself invalidate the design. But when users perceive differences in appearance or feel between individual units, and no information defining the acceptable range exists, there's no way from the outside to distinguish whether the intended structure is simply doing its job or whether some other problem exists in adhesion or layering. An explanation of design intent is only the first step toward answering that question — judging quality requires one more step: reproducible inspection criteria.

"It moves by design" and "any amount of movement is normal" are two different claims. User videos show a mix of cases — some where only one corner visibly gives, and others where the reporter claims almost no movement at all. But because neither the force applied nor the filming conditions are standardized across these videos, it's not possible to derive a defect rate from how things look on screen. Conversely, the mere existence of a cushioning structure doesn't provide grounds to treat every instance of give as normal.
Samsung's individual support responses advise that if concern remains, users should have their device inspected at a service center. With no published numerical standard available, requesting an inspection while preserving the condition noticed during normal use is a more reliable way to assess an individual unit's quality than repeatedly pressing on the screen oneself and comparing results with other people's videos. Samsung itself warns against pressing on the screen with hard objects or fingernails, or applying excessive pressure.
IP48 does not mean "safe even with sand trapped inside"
The fact that the corners move also raises the question of whether water or sand could enter through the gap. The Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra carry an IP48 rating, and according to Samsung's published testing conditions, this means the devices have been tested by submersion in fresh water at a depth of 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes. However, use at the beach or in pools is not recommended, and water resistance can degrade with normal wear. The "4" in the IP rating covers solid objects 1 millimeter or larger in size — it is not a certification against fine sand or dust.
When iFixit disassembled the Fold8, it ran its own test using fluorescent powder roughly 0.04 millimeters in size and sand grains that measured about 0.16 millimeters in the sample used. After opening and closing the device, the hinge reportedly made abnormal noises and would no longer open properly. iFixit itself notes this is not an official IP certification test, so the results cannot be generalized to all units. Even so, both particle sizes fall well below the 1-millimeter threshold that IP4X is designed to protect against — a result consistent with Samsung's advice to avoid sand exposure.
At the same time, the fact that the screen's corners move cannot simply be equated with the existence of a path for water ingress. Samsung told ConsumerTouch that it strengthened screen protection while maintaining existing water and dust resistance performance, but the company has not published a cross-section diagram showing the relationship between the cushioning area and the waterproof seal. Even if a single social-media water test shows a device still working afterward, that is not evidence that can substitute for IP testing or long-term durability data.
What Samsung has offered so far is an explanation that the movement at the corners serves a protective purpose. What's needed next is disclosure of the range of normal deflection and unit-to-unit variation, so that both buyers and service staff can judge the same device by the same standard. Only once that information is disclosed will the answer "it's by design" actually address the concerns of individual users.
