One month after Apple relaxed its regulations on retro game emulators on the App Store, several emulators have already appeared during this short period, becoming a hot topic. The Game Boy emulator iGBA, which showed up right away, was removed for infringing on the copyright of an emulator originally called GBA4iOS (now Delta), but since then several “legitimate” emulators have appeared, including the Nintendo handheld console emulator “Delta” and “Provenance” (which is coming soon), supporting Nintendo consoles and PlayStation.
And now, the first PlayStation 1 (PS1) game emulator, “Gamma,” has appeared on the App Store for iPhone and iPad. Developed by Benjamin Stark, “Gamma” allows users to customize the on-screen controller skin and also appears to support Bluetooth controllers. It is also possible to connect a wired controller to play PS1 games on iPhone or iPad, and wireless keyboards can be used as well.
Furthermore, for users planning to play multiple games, the support for Google Drive and Dropbox is a welcome feature. This allows for backing up disc images and saving progress. Gamma also offers options that let users choose their preferred method and service for backing up games and save data.
The Gamma retro game emulator appears to be built on the codebase of the Delta emulator, with a PS1 core incorporated into it.
To start playing, you need to access the App Store and install the Gamma emulator on your iPhone or iPad. After launching the emulator, tap the '+' (plus) icon to import ROMs, and all your games will automatically appear along with their artwork. Note that you must obtain the ROMs yourself. Also, it seems the app displays full-screen ads.
