NEC, which demonstrated the world's first superconducting qubit in 1999, halted development of physical quantum computers at the end of March 2026. In December 2022 it told a Japanese Cabinet Office panel it was aiming beyond 1,000 qubits. The most it ever publicly demonstrated was 8.
