  • Impact of statin therapy on plasma adiponectin concentrations: A systematic review and meta-analysis of 43 randomized controlled trial arms.

    BACKGROUND AND AIMS The effect of statin therapy on plasma adiponectin levels has not been conclusively studied. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate this effect through a systematic review and meta-analysis of available randomized controlled trials (RCTs). METHODS Quantitative data synthesis was performed using a random-effects model with weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) as summary statistics. RESULTS In 30 studies (43 study arms) with 2953 participants, a significant increase in plasma adiponectin levels was observed after statin therapy (WMD: 0.57 μg/mL, 95% CI: 0.18, 0.95, p = 0.004). In subgroup analysis, atorvastatin, simvastatin, rosuvastatin, pravastatin and pitavastatin were found to change plasma adiponectin concentrations by 0.70 μg/mL (95% CI: -0.26, 1.65), 0.50 μg/mL (95% CI: -0.44, 1.45), -0.70 μg/mL (95% CI: -1.08, -0.33), 0.62 μg/mL (95% CI: -0.12, 1.35), and 0.51 μg/mL (95% CI: 0.30, 0.72), respectively. With respect to duration of treatment, there was a significant increase in the subset of trials lasting ≥12 weeks (WMD: 0.88 μg/mL, 95% CI: 0.19, 1.57, p = 0.012) but not in the subset of <12 weeks of duration (WMD: 0.18 μg/mL, 95% CI: -0.23, 0.58, p = 0.390). Random-effects meta-regression suggested a significant association between statin-induced elevation of plasma adiponectin and changes in plasma low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (slope: 0.04; 95% CI: 0.01, 0.06; p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS The meta-analysis showed a significant increase in plasma adiponectin levels following statin therapy. Although statins are known to increase the risk for new onset diabetes mellitus, our data might suggest that the mechanism for this is unlikely to be due to a reduction in adiponectin expression.

    The adoption of innovative wearable technologies is potentially increasing as a new trend. Jumping into the augmented reality (AR) and Metaverse, Facebook (now known as Meta) launched smart glasses partnering with Ray-Ban sunglasses brand’s parent company EssilorLuxottica. Ray-Ban stories has several technical features for entertainment and socializing; more importantly, these features can be adopted in the future for more advanced wearable. However, these smart glasses also came with many ethical and privacy concerns along with their potential benefits. Furthermore, the unbridled deployment of these smart glasses brought several challenging questions for public social interaction when we will have more such devices in our lives. This short article has discussed the Ray-Ban stories’ ethical and privacy issues for social interaction and public places.

    Background Wearable smart glasses offer new opportunities to enhance limb preservation surgery by enabling hands-free photo/video capture, real-time communication, and improved surgical education. While earlier devices such as Google Glass demonstrated feasibility, they were hindered by limited battery life and cumbersome ergonomics. The new Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses may address these limitations by providing high-definition recording in a lightweight, ergonomic frame. Methods From November 2023 to April 2025, 2 limb preservation surgeons used Ray-Ban Meta consumer-grade smart glasses during foot and ankle procedures. Five domains were evaluated: overall use and feasibility, image and video utility, workflow and communication impact, team and trainee feedback, and technical performance. Patients were enrolled based on procedural scheduling and availability for device setup, with written consent obtained preoperatively. Results The smart glasses were easily integrated into operative workflows, enabling hands-free documentation without disrupting sterility. Trainees found first-person footage more engaging than conventional video formats. Real-time streaming supported remote consultation, and occasional live transmission facilitated tele-mentoring. Although battery capacity decreased with frequent use, no major technical failures occurred over the study period. Conclusion This is the first comprehensive report on using Ray-Ban Meta consumer-grade smart glasses in limb preservation surgery. Early findings support their use as a low-profile, hands-free solution for intraoperative documentation, education, and communication. Further optimization—especially regarding battery endurance and data integration—will enhance the role of wearable devices in surgical care.

  • Accuracy of AI-Assisted Methods in Preoperative Templating Compared to the Standard X-Ray-Based Surgeon-Performed Templating in Total Hip Replacement Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    Accurate preoperative templating in total hip arthroplasty (THA) improves the procedure’s precision, shortens its duration, and reduces complications such as instability and dislocations, prosthesis loosening, and loss of bone stock, among others. The current standard method uses X-ray images to manually determine implant size; however, the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) is gaining increasing interest in its use for preoperative templating. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to assess the difference in accuracy between the standard and AI methods for preoperative templating in regards to implant size. A systematic search of electronic databases identified 36 papers related to AI in preoperative planning in THA. Of these, 9 studies met the inclusion criteria and cumulatively yielded 1049 patient for comparison. Statistical analysis was performed using OpenMetaAnalysis software, utilising a random effects model with reported results at 95% confidence intervals. Results showed the odds for exact size match using an AI-assisted method were 4.163 times higher than the standard manual method in predicting an acetabular cup component (OR=4.163, P<0.001) and 3.672 times higher in predicting a femoral stem component (OR=3.672, P<0.001). Moreover, operative time following the use of the AI-assisted method was 9.2 minutes less than operations following the surgeon-performed method (MD=-9.2, P=0.027), although this was reduced to 4.35 minutes when the source of heterogeneity was removed (MD=-4.35, P=0.025). A key limitation of this study is that all the papers identified in the literature and included in this meta-analysis originated from China, thus limiting generalisability to other healthcare systems and populations. It was concluded that AI-assisted preoperative templating is significantly more accurate than the standard templating method currently used in clinical practice in predicting implant size in total hip arthroplasty and it helps to reduce operating time, although a high level of evidence from different centres worldwide is still lacking to validate its use in clinical practice.
