University of Illinois Team Demonstrates Semiconductor Laser That Lases Without Perfect Periodicity
A research team at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has demonstrated a surface-emitting semiconductor laser that achieves room-temperature, optically pumped lasing at a wavelength of 1.5 $\mu\text{m}$ using a quasi-periodic lattice—containing only partial periodicity—formed with embedded silicon dioxide structures. The result shows that resonator design need not rely on strict periodicity.
