Sigma FP2 Adds 6K Video and Phase-Detection AF to a 376g Full-Frame Body

  • What happened: Sigma announced the Sigma FP2, with AF that includes phase detection, a tilting LCD and 6K video. It goes on sale November 11.
  • Why it matters: The camera packs its shooting features into a small body, but the EVF, external SSD, 32-bit float recording and flash each depend on ports or additional equipment.
  • What to watch next: Decide on your recording format and peripherals, then check the stabilization limits in 6K and how practical the camera is once fully equipped.

On October 23, 2026, Sigma announced the full-frame mirrorless camera Sigma FP2, which goes on sale November 11. It keeps the compact approach of a body weighing about 376g while adding AF that includes phase detection, a tilting LCD and 6K video recording. At the same time, the viewfinder and advanced audio recording require additional parts depending on how you shoot. To choose the FP2, which now offers more photo and video features, you need to separate what is built into the body from what depends on add-on equipment or shooting modes.

Pricing is open, and reservations at Sigma's official online shop open at 10:00 on October 29. According to Digital Camera Watch's coverage of the launch event, the direct-sale price of the body alone is 346,500 yen.

AF and a tilting LCD in a 376g body

The FP2 uses the L-Mount and houses a 35mm full-frame partially stacked CMOS sensor with about 24.5 effective megapixels in a body measuring about 112.8 × 69.9 × 41.8mm. The body alone weighs about 376g, or about 460g with an SD card and battery. These figures apply before adding a lens or accessories.

The original fp, released in 2019, weighed 370g for the body and used contrast-detection AF. The FP2 combines phase detection and contrast detection and detects dogs, cats and birds in addition to people. It updates how the camera tracks subjects while keeping the increase in weight small.

The rear LCD also gains a tilt mechanism, which original fp users had strongly requested. The 3.15-inch, roughly 2.1-million-dot screen moves 90 degrees up and 45 degrees down, making it easier to angle the display when holding the camera at positions other than eye level. Along with the AF update, this is a change that affects how you operate the camera when shooting stills.

The shutter is electronic only. Sigma explains that the fast readout of the partially stacked sensor reduces rolling-shutter distortion, which can appear with moving subjects. That does not mean the distortion disappears, so how much it is reduced and how accurate the AF is are points to confirm in real-world tests after release. Continuous shooting reaches up to about 20 fps, with burst limits at that speed of 200 JPEG frames and 180 frames in DNG RAW.

How to use 6K footage after shooting

The 6K open-gate video mode records the sensor's wide imaging area. Instead of committing to a single aspect ratio at the time of shooting, it suits workflows in which both landscape and portrait footage are cropped from the same material. However, the resolution after cropping depends on how much of the frame you keep, so it should not be read as meaning that shooting in 6K gives the same image quality at any aspect ratio.

Recording formats include 12-bit Apple ProRes RAW and RAW HQ, and Digital Camera Watch reports that internal ProRes RAW recording is supported. MOV H.264/H.265 and Leica's L-Log are also options. You can choose the format in which you hand footage to editing to suit your purpose.

However, the maximum resolution and frame rate need to be checked for each format. The official specifications list 6K up to 59.94p, but 6K recording in ProRes RAW HQ and ProRes RAW is limited to 29.97 fps or lower. "6K60p" and "RAW recording" cannot be treated as a single specification.

The maximum dynamic range of 14.1 stops that Sigma cites is also the manufacturer's stated figure for 4K FF L-Log, not a value common to all modes, including 6K and RAW. Recording destinations include about 70GB of internal memory, SDXC cards (UHS-II) and portable SSDs connected over USB 3.2. However, it is not stated that every format can be saved to every medium, so you need to check the combination of format and destination you plan to use.

Choosing add-ons by port and shooting conditions

Once you decide on a shooting format, the ports and equipment you need change as well. USB-C is the name of a connector shape, so it does not mean that the same device works on both of the FP2's ports.

The FP2 separates its USB-C ports into one for the EVF and one for high-speed data, and sets separate conditions for audio and flash expansion.

The table below is based on the October 23, 2026 announcement and the official product specifications retrieved on October 24, and summarizes the ports, recording media, flash and stabilization of this single model by use case. The conditions for 32-bit float recording come from the official announcement and the footnotes of the press release distributed by Sigma.

Use Body / port support Add-ons and conditions
Checking composition with a dedicated EVF Port 1: USB 2.0 Type-C Optional EVF-21. Port 1 also supports audio, a dedicated release and charging/power supply
Recording to an external SSD Port 2: USB 3.2 Type-C Connect a portable SSD. Port 2 supports mass storage, video, audio, a dedicated release and charging/power supply
32-bit float recording Optional hot shoe unit HU-21 attached When using Panasonic DMW-XLR2 and DMW-DMS1
Flash photography HU-21 must be attached Sync speed of 1/50 sec or slower, or 1/60 sec or slower when using DC crop
Stabilization for handheld video Electronic (EIS), video only Not available for 6K video

The table shows that the connections for the viewfinder and for high-speed data can be chosen separately. However, the fact that the ports are assigned separately does not demonstrate that the EVF, SSD and power supply can all be used at once, and compatibility between recording formats and media needs to be checked separately. The table is a classification of published specifications and does not compare the total weight with the equipment attached.

For audio, do not assume that the body's built-in microphone alone supports 32-bit float recording. The official condition is that the HU-21 is attached and that a "Panasonic DMW-XLR2 and DMW-DMS1" are in use, and details of other equipment combinations cannot be inferred from this wording. For external microphones, a 3.5mm jack and USB UAC2.0 are provided, and headphones are connected via USB. Timecode input shares the external microphone jack.

Also, electronic stabilization cannot be used when you select 6K. The FP2's stabilization is electronic and for video, so rather than assuming in-body stabilization that moves the sensor, you should include a way of supporting the camera in 6K as part of your setup. Even as AF for moving subjects in stills improves, flash photography remains subject to the separate constraint of the sync speeds in the table.

The FP2's small size, counted with its equipment

This way of choosing a setup ties into the philosophy of the fp series. According to Digital Camera Watch's coverage of the launch event, President Kazuto Yamaki described the BF as a camera for simple use, while saying that with the fp he expects users to extend the camera through their own ingenuity. The FP2 carries on this approach of letting the user add the functions they need.

The left and right sides and the bottom of the body have 1/4-inch screw holes, allowing combinations with the optional hand grip HG-11 and base plate BPL-21, among others. The EVF-21 is also optional, using a 0.5-inch OLED of about 5.76 million dots and supporting 90-degree upward tilt. Which parts you add depends on how you shoot, such as whether you work from the screen or the viewfinder.

Whether you can make the most of the roughly 376g figure should be judged on the full shooting kit, including the lens, recording media and audio equipment. After the November 11 release, checking how easy the camera is to handle and how well it sustains shooting with your required formats and equipment attached will show whether the compact body can be built into a configuration that suits your own work.
