448% Does Not Mean "448% Higher"
3DCenter's index accumulates from the July 2025 price set at 100%. So the 448% figure for July indicates that the same set of products, under the same conditions, now stands at 4.48 times the level of a year ago. The actual increase is 348%; reading it as "a 448% surge" overstates the rise by 100 percentage points.
The index's peak was built up rapidly from the end of last year into the start of this year. It rose to 345% in December 2025, then plateaued at 440% in January and February 2026, before briefly dipping to 408% in March. However, it climbed back from 419% in June to 448% in July, setting a new all-time high. This +7.1% increase may look smaller than the sharp rise seen at the start of the year, but it is layered on top of a level that had already reached 4.48 times the baseline month.
For those in Germany buying memory for typical PC builds, the rate of increase alone doesn't determine their budget. When estimating costs for adding more capacity, what matters is how much the budget for the same configuration has ballooned from previous levels. While the index doesn't represent price tags for individual brands, it does let buyers check whether the entire range of qualifying options has moved upward, even as they search for bargains under different product names.

This index is built from the price history of German retailers listed on Geizhals. In the middle weekend of each month, 3DCenter records the lowest price among in-stock offerings at ordinary retailers, excluding listings from eBay and Amazon Marketplace. In other words, this is not a statistic representing average street prices or contract prices, but an observed value that tracks the lowest purchasable price using a consistent method.
The survey covers 20 desktop DDR5 categories, with capacity and module count fixed, as well as speed and latency held constant as conditions. For example, "2x16GB DDR5-6000 CL28" does not fix a manufacturer; instead, it takes the lowest price among products meeting that condition. This approach needs to be distinguished from tracking a specific branded model, since a particular model's price series could be interrupted by discontinuation or supply stoppage—here, the lowest price under the same conditions is tracked instead.
On the other hand, this index cannot be directly read as representing the global DDR5 market or actual retail prices in Japan. It is a single observation point taken mid-month; store-by-store stock levels, limited-time sales, and shortages of individual kits move independently. Nor can this data alone determine whether DRAM contract prices, supply volume, or distribution inventory caused this particular rise. It should be used as a metric for gauging price levels and the breadth of increases.
18 Categories Rose, Spreading Even to the Fastest Tiers
The change from June to July was not concentrated solely in low-capacity products, nor solely in high-speed overclocking-oriented ones. Of the 20 categories, 2 remained flat in price, while the remaining 18 rose. Lining up three representative conditions shows just how broad the range of rising lowest prices was.

This latest 448% figure makes it harder to lock in PC build cost estimates—including DDR5—based on prices from a few months prior. If you're planning to add memory later, you'll need to set aside a separate budget line at the time of initial parts selection for the cost of buying another matching set at the same capacity and speed. At least based on observations in Germany, it is not a situation where room to find cheaper alternatives remains evenly available.
On the other hand, the fact that the index is at a high level alone doesn't mean it will necessarily rise by the same margin next month. Even in this latest tally, 2 categories remained flat, and not all 20 conditions moved at the same pace. Watching whether the spread across 18 categories holds up in next month's data, and whether the +7.1% rise from June to July turns out to be temporary, will make it easier to judge whether the lowest prices for PC building will settle back into a high plateau or continue climbing further.
