This technology integrates the transmitting and receiving components of Face ID, reducing the size and thickness of the structural elements. According to the claim, this would enable a smaller Dynamic Island.
Unlike conventional lenses, a metalens is a new type of ultra-thin lens that uses nanostructures on its surface to focus light. While traditional lenses use curved surfaces to bend light, metalenses manipulate light through minute, precisely arranged structures called "meta-atoms."

Digital Chat Station's claim contradicts a January report from supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who stated that "the Dynamic Island size will not change significantly across the entire iPhone 17 lineup."
