ScienceCurved Solar Cells Could Boost Underwater Power Output by Up to 15.9%, Navy Lab Finds
According to the research team's theoretical model, an optimally curved amorphous silicon solar cell, evaluated based on device footprint, reached a maximum efficiency of 59.7% at a depth of 2 meters. Using calculations based on the optical properties of South Pacific water, the optimized curved solar cell's daily cumulative power output was 9.4-15.9% higher than that of a flat-panel design. However, practical implementation hinges on factors such as rapid light attenuation depending on water quality and depth, as well as resistance to corrosion, high water pressure, and biofouling.
