Gate leakage current refers to the unintended flow of electrons through the insulating layer of a transistor's gate. As transistors are scaled down to the nanometer level, the insulating layer becomes so thin that electrons can pass through it due to quantum tunneling. This leads to increased power consumption, heat generation, and potential circuit instability, posing a major challenge for advanced semiconductor manufacturing.
